Experience
I graduated from Denison University with a Bachelor of Arts in English/Creative Writing and a minor in Theatre. Currently I'm doing graduate studies in secondary education at Long Island University, working towards a master's degree in secondary education and an Advanced Certification in Literacy 5-12. I have a great deal of teaching and tutoring experience. I began tutoring during my second year of high school. For several years, I taught at a local nature center, using an earth science curriculum that I designed myself. I have taught at Sunday school, taught English to native speakers of Spanish, and tutored other students while at college. Currently, I'm student teaching at a middle school in Rye Neck, New York. I have worked with children with autism, and I am willing to tutor students of all abilities in English, writing, reading comprehension, editing, test preparation, and test-taking skills. My tutoring approach is based on the Socratic method: rather than give students the answer, I use a conversational method to get them to discover the answer by themselves. I provide the support until students can learn on their own. Being able to solve problems by themselves gives students a great sense of pride.In my spare time, I like to read, write, and direct theatre productions.
