Experience

I love writing and grammar and would love to help you write an application essay that will get the reader's attention. I specialize in college applications, but also help people with essays for graduate school and scholarships. Whether you have your sights set on the Ivy League or are seeking to attend a quality regional school, the application process can be very intimidating. College admissions are more competitive than ever, and a great essay can help you stand out. I can help you at any point in the process whether you’re just starting out and still deciding where to apply, you’re brainstorming essay topics, or you already have a draft and are looking for help with grammar and editing. I can help you with both common application and supplemental essays so your essay(s) will showcase you in a memorable way. While I focus on application essays, I can look over your entire application to help you highlight your unique strengths and accomplishments and make sure are presenting yourself in the best way possible. I graduated from Harvard in 2008 with a degree in Government. As an undergrad, I spent a summer and spring working as a student recruiter for the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative to increase applicants from low-income backgrounds. In that position, I worked closely with admissions and financial aid officers. I learned about what makes an applicant stand out and what they look for in essays. I now live in Rochester, but I have worked with college students in Boston and Rochester at a variety of schools for nine years as a campus minister. In that time, I gained insight on what makes a college a good fit. I have experience helping students from a variety of backgrounds with essays for both college and graduate school applications. I love writing and grammar and would love to help you not only improve your college essay, but also learn more about writing. I take a personal interest in each student I work with and want to help you succeed in improving your writing skills and finding a college you will love. I love working with international students, and can help you improve your English skills. I have experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in informal tutoring and editing for grad school applications. I only know beginning ASL, but we used typing or writing to communicate more complex ideas and concepts when an interpreter wasn't available or when a student preferred to meet one-on-one.

Hobbies

I stay home with my preschooler but am also a freelance writer and tutor part time. I enjoy spending quality time with my husband and kids and taking advantage of the great libraries and museums around Rochester. I love to read, especially mystery and crime novels, but also keep up to date on news. When I worked at MIT, I was part of the Ballroom Dance Team and really liked learning the different dances. I also enjoyed the unique MIT flavor of dance lessons that included physics and and the application of chemistry to maximize the holding power of hair products for competitions. I also like watching Movies and TV shows with my husband, family, and friends and quoting them to each other regularly. My current favorite TV shows are "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Fresh Off The Boat," but I also love "Parks and Recreation," "30 Rock," "The A-Team," "Law and Order," and "Batman" (the 1960s series), among others. Though I already owned a huge collection of animated movies before becoming a parent, an obsessed toddler watching "Frozen" more times than I can count has led to me memorizing most of that movie along with several other Disney favorites.
